In Vandargal Vendrargal- Madan raises the question of
Mohammed Ghazini's invasion at Somnath, its subsequent destruction.
The question raised by him is, when Rajendra's army went east wards while Westwards came the Invasion.
Did Rajendra knew about the invasion and avoided taking the western path ?
I have read K.M.Munshi's Jai Somnatha and gone through the Glory that was Gurjara Desa.
I have not found in it any refernce to Rajendra or the Chola army helping Bhoja.
Jawaharlal Nehru in his Glimpses of World History has given lot of attention to this Chola Empire and its influence on Greater India and Indian culture travelling eastward along with the Chola Empire.
But I think he has not mentioned this Chola Army moving towards western India.
Scholars like you have to details this and release it as a Book.

வரலாறு என்பது சிலரின் விழைவுக் கற்பனையோ அல்லது பரப்புரைப் புனைவோ அல்ல. வரலாறு நமக்குக் கிடைத்திருக்கும் ஆதாரங்களாலேயே உருவாக்கப் படுகிறது. இதை பின்பற்றுபவர்கள் மட்டுமே வரலாற்று ஆய்வாளர்களாகவும் அறிஞர்களாகவும் இருக்க முடியும். வரலாற்று அறிஞர்களிடம் பல விஷயங்களில் இருக்கும் கருத்து வேற்றுமைகள் கூட கிடைக்கும் ஆதாரங்களை புரிந்தேற்றுக் கொள்வதில் வரும்
மாறுபாடுகளாலேயே வருகின்றன. அவ்வாறு இருக்கும் போது எந்த ஆதாரமும் எந்த வகையிலும் இல்லாத தை மாத தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டு என்பதை ஒரு வரலாற்றுக்கான தளம் ஏற்றுக் கொள்வதோடு மட்டுமல்லாமல் அதை விதந்தோதுவதும் அதை ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளாதவர்களைப் பழிப்பதும் சற்றும் சகிக்கக்கூடியதாக இல்லை. மேலும் இந்தச் சட்டத்தைக் கொண்டுவந்த திமுக அரசைப் போற்றியும் அதிமுக அரசைப் பழித்தும்
அத்தளம் வெளியிட்டிருக்கும் தலையங்கம் நேர்மைக் குறைவானது.. அறிவுக்கும் ஆய்வின் மான்புக்கும் களங்கமானது.
எடுத்த எடுப்பிலேயே தமிழர்களால் நிரூபிக்கப்பட்ட ஒன்று என்று தை மாத புத்தாண்டைக் கூறும் வரலாறு தளம் தன்னெஞ்சு அறிந்து பொய்யுரைக்கிறது. இதற்கு எந்த ஆதாரமும் இதுவரை கொடுக்கப்படாதது மட்டுமல்லாமல் பல அறிஞர்களால் ஆதாரங்களோடு மறுக்கப்பட்ட ஒன்றை நிரூபித்து விட்டதாகக் கூறுவது அறிவுலகத்துக்குச் செய்யும் பச்சைத் துரோகம். மானமும் அறிவும் நிரம்பிய யாராலும்
ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள முடியாத ஆபாசக் குப்பையான 60 ஆண்டுகளின் பிறப்பு பற்றிய கதை என்று சித்திரைப் புத்தாண்டு கொண்டாடும் அனைவரையும் பழித்துரைக்கும் அத்தளம் புராணக்கதைகளின் குறியீட்டுத் தன்மையை அறியாதவர்களால் நடத்தப்படுபவது அல்ல. பெரும்பாலான தமது வரலாற்று ஆரய்ச்சிகளை கோவில்களில் செய்து வரும் அத்தளத்திற்கு பொதுவான திராவிடக் கழக ஏரணங்கள் புராணங்களுக்கு
பொருந்தா என்ற அறிதலும் புதிதல்ல.
இந்துமதம் சார்ந்த தொன்மங்கள் மட்டுமல்ல எந்த மதத்தைச் சார்ந்த தொன்மங்களும் நேரடி ஏரணங்களுக்குப் பொருந்தா என்பதும் அவர்களுக்குத் தெரியாததல்ல. 1921 மற்றும் 1933ல் தமிழறிஞர்களால் முடிவு செய்யப்பட்டது என்று பலராலும் தைப் புத்தாண்டு கருத்தாக்கத்துக்கு ஆதாரமாக கூறப்படுவதையே எதையும் ஆதாரத்துடன் பேச வேண்டிய வரலாறு.காம் தளமும் ஆதாரமாகச் சொல்வது உள்ளபடியே
மிகுந்த வேதனை அளிப்பதாக இருக்கிறது. இந்தத் தமிழ் அறிஞர்கள் என்னன்ன காரணிகளை முன்னிட்டு இந்த முடிவுகளைச் சொன்னார்கள் என்பதை யாராலும் இதுநாள் வரை சொல்லவே முடியவில்லை. வரலாறு தளம் இதை விளக்கினால் தமிழ்கூறும் நல்லுலகம் மொத்தமும் நன்றி உடையதாக இருக்கும். ஆனால் இதற்கு மாறாக சித்திரைதான் தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டு என்று பல கட்டுரைகள் தமிழ்ஹிந்து தளத்திலேயே
அறிவியல், வரலாறு மற்றும் இலக்கிய ஆதாரங்களோடு வந்திருக்கின்றன.234 மேலும் சில கட்டுரைகள்567 குறிப்புகளில் உள்ளன.
தமிழ்நாடு தொல்லியல் துறையில் பணி புரிந்தவரும் கல்வெட்டு அறிஞருமான எஸ். இராமச்சந்திரன் தினமணி நாளேட்டில் எழுதிய கட்டுரை8 அடுக்கடுக்கான ஆதாரங்களை உள்ளடிக்கிய ஒன்றாகும். குடந்தை அரசு கலைக் கல்லூரியின் முன்னாள் தமிழ்ப் பேராசிரியர் சாமி தியாகராஜன் அவர்கள் துக்ளக் இதழில் பல ஆதாரங்களோடு கட்டுரை எழுதியிருக்கிறார். இவற்றுக்கெல்லாம் எந்தவித மறுப்பும் எதிர்
ஆதாரங்களும் இது வரை தை மாதப் புத்தாண்டு ஆர்வலர்களால் கொடுக்கப்படவில்லை. தமிழ்நாட்டின் சிறந்த வரலாற்று அறிஞரான ஐயராவதம் மகாதேவன் ராமச்சந்திரன் அவர்களின் தினமணி கட்டுரையைப் பற்றி இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறார்.9
“சித்திரையில் புத்தாண்டு பிறக்கிறது (தினமணி, 24 ஜனவரி 2008) என்பது வரலாற்று ரீதியாகவும் தமிழ் மரபின்படியும் மறுக்க முடியாத உண்மையே” ஆனால் ஐராவதம் அவர்கள் இவ்வாறு சொன்னதை அடியோடு மறைத்துவிட்டு “பஞ்சாங்கங்களை வான நூல், பருவங்களின் சுழற்சி ஆகியவற்றின் தற்கால நிலையை அறிவியல் கண்ணோட்டத்துடன் ஆராய்ந்து திருத்திக் கொள்ள நமக்குத் துணிவு இல்லையெனில், அறுவடை
நாளாகிய பொங்கல் திருவிழாவைப் புத்தாண்டு என்று கொண்டாடுவதில் என்ன தவறு? வரலாற்று ரீதியில் பார்த்தாலும், இந்தியாவில் இன்று நடைமுறையில் உள்ள பல புத்தாண்டுகளில் இதுவும் ஒன்று என ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளலாமே?” என்று சொன்னதை அந்த வரலாற்று அறிஞர் தைப்புத்தாண்டை ஆதரிப்பதாக திரித்துக் கூறுகின்றனர். ஐராவதம் அவர்களின் கூற்றுப்படி பஞ்சாங்கங்கள் மாற்றி அமைக்கப்படும் போது
தை மாதமும் பின்னோக்கிச் சென்றுவிடும் என்ற அடிப்படை உண்மையைக் கூட கணக்கில் எடுக்காமல் தைப் புத்தான்டை விதந்தோதுகின்றனர். தை என்றாலும் சித்திரை என்றாலும் அவற்றை நாம் பஞ்சாங்கத்தைப் பார்த்தே அறிந்து கொள்ள முடியும் என்பது மற்றொரு அடிப்படை உண்மை.
தமிழ் இலக்கியத்திலிருந்து மேற்கோள்களும் ரசனை மிகுந்த பல கட்டுரைகளையும் அளித்துக் கொன்டிருக்கிற வரலாறு தளத்தினரால் தைப் புத்தாண்டுக்கு எத்தனை தமிழ் இலக்கிய ஆதாரம் அளிக்க முடியும்? எத்தனை இலக்கிய ஆதாரத்தால் சித்திரை புத்தாண்டு இல்லை என்று சொல்ல முடியும்? வரலாறு.காம் தளத்தினர் முடிந்த முடிவாகக் கூறுகின்ற தை மாதப் புத்தாண்டுக்கு அவர்கள் எத்தனை

I am giving an extract from my Research Article titled "Rajarajaeswarem & Gangaikondaeswarem Temples - Part 3, in the Mayyam Hub Web site.

".....This expedition of the forces of Rajendra Cholan - 1 towards the north-west of India, was most possibly to assist his ally Paramara Bhoja of Malawa of south Madya Pradesh to fight the invasion of Mahumad of Gazni of west Afghanistan, and also relieve the Hindu kingdoms of Kanyakubja, Mathura, Namanaikkonam, Panchappalli, Masunidesam and Athinagar.

The confedaracy that existed between the Bhoja king of Malawa and Rajendra Chola - 1 is confirmed by an inscription from Balagamve in south Maharashtra which refers to Cholas "as the greatest of kings". Another inscription from Kulenur in Karnataka confirms this confederacy was not only between Bhoja of Malawa and Rajendra Chola, but also inclusive of Gangeya of Kalachuria....."

There are references in these inscriptions which confirm that there had been a confederacy between Chola, Bhoja and Gangeya. It appears initially this confederacy was necessary to fight against Chalukya Jayasimha - 2 who was another powerful king in the north.

The confederacy intitially met had a setback and finally won over king Jayasimha - 2. There is an inscription of Jayasimha at Kulenur drawn after this initial setback.

".....O Kundiga !! when they name thee in respect of courage what further praise can others give ?? Is it not what is said by the troops of "Chola", "Gangeya" and king "Bhoja", with open mouths as they flee away in the battle where they are pressed by thy elephants...,"

".....that famous king Jayasimha - a moon to "the lotus which was king Bhoja glorious as sun", a very lion "to the elephant which was Chola the greatest of kings" - was esteemed the supreme king of kings....having searched out, beset, and pursued ground down and put to flight the "confederacy of Malava".....Kundama the chieftain in the year of Saka era 941 repaired the temple of God Nandikesvaradeva......"

Do we have any inscriptions or literature references mentioning this 'Pact or treaty' of Cholas with the Paramars (Bhojan).

Probably this association could be the reason for a southern version of the Agni-Kunda origin legend. Paramars were the early claimants of this version for their origin (10th century), ofcourse only if we discount the Kapilar's song on one of the velir chiefs.
